Community Investment Department General Manager Abigail R. Marquez joined the Los Angeles Civil Rights Department’s panel, “The Cost of Hate: How Public Speech and Online Content Impact Our Communities,” to discuss how hate and discrimination can affect businesses, workers, and neighborhoods—from lost customers and reduced economic activity to people feeling unsafe or disconnected from available resources.

Co-hosted by the Civil Rights Department and Councilmember Adrin Nazarian, the discussion also featured Lucy Varpetian of the Armenian Bar Association and Joumana Silvan-Saba, the Civil Rights Department’s Director of Civic Participation and Human Rights.

Panelists emphasized the importance of reporting discrimination so the City can respond and connect residents with supportive resources. Those who experience or witness hate in Los Angeles can file a report at LAisForEveryone.com.

At CID, we believe our economy and communities are strongest when everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute, and thrive.
